Barontini Cup
The first edition of the Barontini Cup was organized in 1966 to commemorate the legendary Livorno partisan commander Ilio Barontini, a member of the Constituent Assembly and Senator of the Republic, who died in a tragic road accident on the outskirts of Florence on 22 January 1951. debut, thanks to the high identity and spectacular content that mixes sport, history and traditions, the race forcefully entered the heart of the Livorno area quickly becoming one of the "classics" of the Livorno rowing season. The competitive rivalry between the districts is in fact still very strong today and every year the participation is more and more enthusiastic, colorful and participated by spectators and supporters who, leaning out from the "shoulders" to incite their favorites, experience the race side by side with the rowers .Unlike all the other rowing competitions in Livorno, the Barontini Cup is held over a time trial, usually in the month of June. The boats of the city districts (10-oared goiters and 4-oared gozzettes competing in separate trials) leave one after the other, at established intervals, from the open space of the Scali delle Cantine, opposite the lawn of the Fortezza Nuova, and must complete in the shortest possible time a 3,200-metre circuit that winds along the Medici ditches in the historic center of Livorno to finally end at the starting point. A real slalom on the water along the Medici ditches among bridges, bottlenecks and stairways in which the he skill of the helmsmen and the general harmony of the crew represent the real added value compared to the power of rowing.
