Spectacular and extremely demanding for the crews, the Risiatori Cup is a rowing competition in the open sea that usually takes place in Livorno in the month of June. Born in 1978 on the initiative of the Neri family, it bears the name of the "Risiatori", the fearless unloaders of port remembered for their rescue feats while, braving the storms aboard small fishing boats, they tried to secure the right to unload the ships entering the port of Livorno. Even today, the Risiatori Cup is a race made up of strong emotions, enormous effort , commitment, courage and determination. All together frantically, for 35 very long minutes. Not surprisingly, the athletes arrive at the finish line completely exhausted and overwhelmed by fatigue. In fact, 7600 meters of rowing at full speed in the open sea do not discount anyone. We start from the Torre della Meloria, located about 5 kilometers outside the Molo Novo dam, which represents the entrance to the port of Livorno. After the starting phase each helmsman can decide the strategy and the route to follow. At that point there are no more buoys, different currents, particular trajectories. Out there, the 8 goiters with 10 oars are all on the same level and, being a free course, even possible clashes between crews, spectacular "boardings", or attempts to hinder the opponents are not excluded. The finish line is instead in the stretch of water of the Novi Lena yards, in the heart of Borgo Cappuccini and right in front of the black and white cellar. Spectators can watch the race by getting on special tugs or on their own boats. The scenario that lies ahead on race Sunday is nonetheless fantastic, with hundreds of boats following the race on the edge of the regatta field, and a large crowd concentrated in the finish area, in Darsena Nuova.
